CALL FOR PAPERS
2nd International Symposium Hermeneia

Thinking Ricoeur: Life and narrative

International Conference | September 30, October 1-2, 2013 |

Universidade Federal de Santa Catarina (UFSC), Florianópolis-SC, Brazil.

 Presentation:

In 2013 it is celebrated the centenary of Paul Ricoeur’s birth and the 30th anniversary of the publication of the first volume of Time and Narrative. That is why we have chosen Thinking Ricoeur: Life and narrative as the title of the second edition of the International Symposium Hermeneia, which is going to be held from the 30th of September to the 2nd of October, 2013, at the Universidade Federal de Santa Catarina (UFSC), Florianópolis-SC, Brazil. “Thinking Ricoeur” refers to his famous sentence: “the symbol gives rises to thought”. Thereby we propose to discuss his work since the three volumes of Time and Narrative, in which he analyses the temporality’s dead-ends, suggesting that a poetics of narrativity, if does not resolve those questions, can at least bring them to light and develop them. Since then Ricoeur has employed concepts as narrative identity, mimetic activity, praxis, among others, that have had a considerable impact in several fields of the humanities, as in history, cultural studies, literary studies, linguistics, psychology, philosophy, anthropology, sociology and theology, to name a few. For that reason, it will be also welcomed the contributions that discuss the development and the reception of Ricoeur’s work for others thinkers and traditions in the last thirty years, specially about the connection between life and narrative.

The thematic axes of the Conference are:
a)    Hermeneutics and Human Sciences: History, Sociology, Literature, Psychology and Anthropology
b)    Ethics, Politics and Recognition
c)    Studies in Religion and Philosophy
d)    Phenomenology and Hermeneutics
e)    Historicity and Temporality
f)     Action, Language and Narrative
